Groundbreaking Scientific Breakthrough Brings Dire Wolves Back from Extinction

For years, fans of Game of Thrones and history buffs alike have been fascinated by the myth of the dire wolf — a powerful, mysterious creature that once roamed the Earth. Extinct for thousands of years, the dire wolf was thought to be lost to time. But thanks to advancements in biotechnology, these ancient canines have been brought back to life. Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based biotech company, has successfully achieved the de-extinction of the dire wolf. Here's how they managed this awe-inspiring feat.

What Exactly Are Dire Wolves?

Dire wolves were large, carnivorous canines that once dominated the Americas during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene epochs, roughly between 125,000 and 10,000 years ago. Known for their impressive size and strength, these wolves typically had white fur, as detailed by the team at Colossal Biosciences.

The Path to De-Extinction

How did Colossal Biosciences manage to revive a species that had been gone for millennia? According to their official statement, the team embarked on a detailed process that included multiple cutting-edge genetic techniques:

  1. DNA Extraction and Sequencing: Scientists retrieved and sequenced ancient DNA from two dire wolf fossils, enabling them to access critical genetic information.

  2. Genome Assembly and Comparison: They then reconstructed the ancient genomes and compared them with the genomes of modern canids — wolves, foxes, jackals, and dholes — to identify the specific genetic traits of dire wolves.

  3. Gene Identification: The team pinpointed genetic variants that were unique to dire wolves, including markers for a white coat color and thick, long fur.

  4. Gene Editing: Using the closest living relative of the dire wolf, the gray wolf, Colossal's researchers performed precise multiplex gene editing to introduce the dire wolf’s traits into the donor genome.

  5. Cloning and Embryo Transfer: The final steps involved cloning high-quality cell lines and transferring them into the egg cells of a surrogate wolf. After a successful pregnancy, the team was able to welcome the first-born dire wolf pups, marking a monumental achievement in de-extinction.

The Visionaries Behind the Project

At the helm of this incredible project is George Church, a renowned geneticist, molecular engineer, and chemist who co-founded Colossal Biosciences. Church, a professor at Harvard University and a founder of dozens of biotech companies, is widely recognized for his work in genetic engineering. Named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017, Church’s pioneering work in biotechnology has set the stage for groundbreaking innovations like the de-extinction of the dire wolf.

Speaking about the project, Church emphasized the importance of genetic diversity in conservation. He explained, “Before we lose species like the red wolf, we must focus on preserving and expanding genetic diversity. Technologies like ancient DNA sequencing and multiplex gene editing are helping us resurrect lost species — and the dire wolf is a prime example of how far we’ve come.”

Colossal’s CEO: Ben Lamm

Behind the scenes at Colossal is CEO Ben Lamm, a billionaire entrepreneur with a net worth of $3.7 billion, as reported by Forbes. Lamm is thrilled with the company’s success in reviving the dire wolf. In a recent statement, he expressed pride in his team’s work: “This achievement marks a pivotal moment in our journey. We’ve demonstrated that our de-extinction technology works, and this is just the beginning.”

Lamm went on to describe the team’s efforts in bringing the extinct species back to life: “We took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull, and from that, we created healthy dire wolf pups. It’s a clear example of how advanced technology can achieve what was once thought impossible. The potential impact on conservation is immeasurable.”

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's son, Rocky Thirteen Barker, might just be following in his parents' footsteps and preparing for his own musical debut one day.

On April 6, the 17-month-old was seen exploring a Yamaha grand piano during a family trip to Disneyland, with Kourtney sharing the adorable moment on Instagram. The piano, which Rocky touched with his little hands, resembles one found in the lobby of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel.

Travis, famous as the drummer for Blink-182, has musical talent beyond the drums, and his wife Kourtney is also musically inclined. This was showcased in a 2021 Instagram video of the couple performing a duet of the song "Heart and Soul," a tune popularized in the 1988 film Big.

In addition to this sweet musical moment, Kourtney shared more photos from their Disneyland adventure, including shots of some delicious treats they indulged in, like Mickey Mouse-shaped soft pretzels with cheese, churros, and a caramel apple.

Megan Fox: Sexy at LAX

Spending the week in Los Angeles following her Golden Globes appearance, Megan Fox was spotted arriving at LAX Airport to catch a flight out of town on Saturday (January 17).

Sans boyfriend Brian Austin Green, the "Transformers" hottie gave a big grin to awaiting paparazzi as she hopped out of her chauffeured car and headed into the airport entrance while her driver toted along her luggage.

Meanwhile, during her visit to the red carpet this past Sunday, Megan showed insecurity when it comes to her own looks.

"I am pretty sure I am a doppelganger for Alan Alda," said Fox. "I’m a tranny. I’m a man. I’m so painfully insecure. I’m on the verge of vomiting now."

Miley Cyrus Hits the Studio, Preps for DC

Out working weekends, Miley Cyrus was spotted with Grandma at the Todd-AO Glen Glenn Sound Studio in Los Angeles on Saturday morning (January 17).

The "Hannah Montana" starlet was all smiles as she made her way past following paparazzi and in to record some vocals.

Meanwhile, Miley is soon to be flying out to Washington DC, as she's been tapped as one of the performers at the "Kids' Inaugural: We Are The Future" concert on Monday (January 19).

Miss Cyrus will be joining fellow performers including the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Bow Wow, with the show airing on the Disney Channel from 8-9:30 p.m. ET.

Jonas Brothers Head to Washington DC

Gearing up for a big performance on Monday (January 19), Nick Jonas from the Jonas Brothers was spotted arriving with his little brother at Los Angeles International Airport to catch a flight out of town on Saturday (January 17).

Making a separate departure, Kevin and Joe Jonas were also spotted meandering through security at LAX airport en route to the big kids concert at the Obama inauguration - with Joe sporting a fashionable t-shirt with the imprint of a stop sign and the words "Don't Stop Believing" on it.

Of the inauguration show to be hosted by Michelle Obama, Nick tells, "It's absolutely an honor to be able to perform. For me, I've always talked about a future in the White House someday, so to be able to go back again should be fun."

He adds, "But it really is an honor. What we're doing is all for the children and the families of the military, and we couldn't have been more thrilled to have been asked."
